Furniture City Shootout 2004 |

Not even a Category 4 hurricane could stop the 3rd annual Furniture City Shootout from going down on August 14th & 15th, 2004. The rain started early Saturday morning. At first it was a light drizzle... As scheduled, at 8:30ish AM, the captains meeting was held at the primary field site....Phillips Soccer Complex in north High Point. Through the fog and the light rain, the teams were able to see the three levels of bermuda-covered fields that we were scheduled to play on. The list of teams included 5 national qualifiers from the 2003 season (Ring, Pike, E-Pig, B.A.T., and Vicious Cycle). Rain had fallen on and off on Thursday and Friday and the forecast showed Charlie was moving on a northern path toward central NC, so it was decided by the owners of the fields, the Triad Soccer Alliance, that the tournament couldn't be played at the Phillips Soccer Complex. All teams were directed to our backup site at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, NC, about 45 miles west of High Point. Tampa Bulge dropped out leaving us with 14 teams, adjustments were made by The Commission -- led by tournament director Brian Gane, and the first rounds started at roughly 10:30am. The adjusted pools included two power pools of 5 teams, and pool C... Pool A: Ring of Fire, Electric Pig, Vicious Cycle, Cleveland Jawbone, and Tanasi Pool B: Big Ass Truck, NJ Pike, La Cosa Nostra, WUFF Warriors, and Vault (Virginia) Pool C: Asheville Greenman, HOSS (Wilmington Masters), ED (Raleigh Masters), Mr. Bad Example (Asheville Masters) All pool play games were played to 13. The first round was played in the pouring rain, but after that the rain stopped and we really didn't see much rain for the rest of the day. The fields were wet, of course, but nothing really sloppy on Saturday. It rained a little more early Sunday morning before games started but held off most all day. Strangely, the wind didn't ever seem to be a big issue either. All games on Sunday were to 15. Here's a recap of how things turned out... Saturday: Pool A results... Ring (4-0) Vicious (3-1) E-Pig (2-2) Jawbone (1-3) Tanasi (0-4) Pool B results... LCN (3-1, beat Pike in head-to-head matchup to win pool) Pike (3-1) BAT (2-2) Vault (2-2, upset LCN in the 3rd round of pool play) Warriors (0-4) Pool C results... ?? Sunday: Prequarters... Vault over Tanasi BAT over Asheville Vicious over Mr. Bad Example Pike over HOSS E-Pig over ED Jawbone over WUFF (this was a good game, back and forth, the final was close) Quarters... Ring over Vault BAT over Vicious (16-15?...real close) E-Pig over Pike LCN over Jawbone (Jawbone was up 15-14, hard cap at 16) Semis... Ring over BAT (15-10?) LCN over E-Pig (15-8) Finals... A rematch of the 2003 finals. Ring over LCN (15-10)
